How To Lay Patio Paving

Are you looking for a way to create an outdoor space that you can enjoy in the warm summer months? Perhaps you are wanting to transform your garden with a new patio area, or just freshen up an existing one? Whatever the reason, laying patio paving is one of the best methods of adding value and charm to your home.

But if it’s something you haven’t done before, then this blog post will provide all the information needed on how to lay patio paving, so that anyone can confidently complete this project themselves.

(PLEASE NOTE: This is a rough guide to putting up a panel fence. It is important you follow manufacturer’s guidelines on installation.)

1. Decide on the shape and size of your patio:

If you don’t already have an existing patio, you must think about the space available for a patio and factor in the intended use of the patio. Additionally, any existing landscaping features such as trees or pathways should also be considered when choosing a shape and size, as these will influence where on your property the patio can best fit.

2. Excavate the area where your patio will be laid:

Before laying your patio, it is important to first excavate the area where you plan to place it. Use a shovel to dig down about six inches and make sure that the area is levelled, removing any rocks and roots along the way. It's also important to check for any underground electrical or water lines before you start digging!

3. Create a stable foundation for your patio:

Creating a stable foundation for your patio is essential to ensure it remains level and secure over time. To do this, fill your excavated area with crushed stone or gravel. After that, place weed fabric over the area.

4. Apply a layer of sand for a smooth surface

Applying a layer of sand to the patio paving is an important step in ensuring a smooth, even surface. Begin by spreading a layer of coarse sand over the entire patio area. Make sure to spread it evenly using a rake and check that the thickness is consistent across the entire area.

Finally, use a tamper or vibrating plate compactor to level the sand and make sure the surface is even before laying your slabs or paving stones. This will ensure the foundation is stable and secure for years to come.

5. Lay the pavers

Place each paver one at a time following your desired pattern, tapping down firmly with a rubber mallet to secure in place and ensuring there are no gaps between the pavers. Use a spirit level to double check that all of the pavers are even and secure with mortar.

6. Finishing touches

The final step of laying a patio paving is adding edging to the paving. The edging materials can vary from metal trim, plastic or concrete, depending on the desired look. Once the perimeter has been established, it is important to seal the patio with a good quality sealant. This will help protect your patio pavers, prevent weeds or plants growing through, and ensure long-lasting patio paving.

You’re finished!

Creating a patio for your outdoor space can be a great way to spruce up your yard. With the right planning and materials, you can craft an outdoor living area that will last for years and provide an enjoyable place to relax and unwind from everyday life.
