(PLEASE NOTE: This is a rough guide to removing and replacing bricks. It is important you follow manufacturer’s guidelines on installation.)

What You’ll Need:

Removing and replacing bricks requires several specialized tools. First, you will need a hammer and cold chisel to remove any existing mortar that is adhering the brick to the wall.

Alternatively, you can use an electric hammer or rotary hammer with a masonry bit for more efficient removal of mortar. When using either method, be sure to wear eye protection and gloves to ensure safe conditions for you to work.

How to Remove the Old Brick:

  1. First, use a hammer to tap the pointed edge of a cold chisel about ¼ inch deep into the mortar joint. Then angle the chisel towards the brick and strike it with the hammer to help break away some of the mortar around the brick. Take care not to hit too hard and damage adjacent bricks or surrounding areas.
  2. Once you have loosened some of the mortar, use a thin putty knife to lift any bits of mortar or debris that are stuck to the brick or wall surface. Gently scrape along both sides of the mortar line, taking care not to gouge or otherwise damage adjacent bricks or areas.
  3. To remove the brick, insert your crowbar between it and its neighbours. Hold firmly and carefully rock back and forth until you feel it loosen from its place in the wall. Once it has come free from its position on one side, pry outward gently until you are able to pull it out completely by hand.

How to Install the New Brick

  1. First, clean off any debris in the hole from the removed brick that might hinder proper adhesion of the new brick. The hole left by old brick must also be filled up with fresh mortar before placing in the new one so that it is flush with wall surface when completed.
  2. Mix up some mortar using masonry sand and cement according to package instructions. Apply a small amount of mortar onto one side of the brick before placing it into position along the wall. Explore our Brick & Stone Buying Guide to find the best brick type for your project.
  3. Use a line level or spirit level to ensure the new brick is in line with the existing ones while adjusting your mortar line accordingly. Make sure that each brick is firmly pressed into place when setting it down so that good contact is made between mortar and brick surface.
  4. Make sure the new brick is securely bonded with surrounding bricks by trowelling fresh mortar along their edges. As you do this step make sure no voids remain as this can weaken their bond over time.

You’re all finished!

Replacing old and damaged brick is an essential task for long-lasting walls and exterior remodelling projects. Although replacing bricks can be physically demanding, it can also be immensely rewarding, and with this guide, you’ll be able to remove and replace bricks like an expert.
