How the patio goes together

1. Set out with a fall

Mark the area with a slight slope running away from the house, so rainwater drains off rather than towards the wall.

2. Dig out and lay the sub-base

Dig out around 150mm, then lay and firm up your MOT Type 1 hardcore to about 100mm.

3. Lay the slabs

Lay each slab on a full bed of mortar (roughly four parts sharp sand to one part cement), tap it down level, and leave a small joint between slabs.

4. Point the joints

Let the bed set for a day, then fill the joints with mortar or a brush-in jointing compound.

Quantities are a guide based on standard coverages and include your chosen wastage. Sub-base and mortar can vary with ground conditions and how level the base is, so it's worth ordering a little over. Pop into any DBM branch and we'll help you finalise the order.
